Approved and generic options exist

Vets have thousands of FDA-approved medicines to draw on, the FDA says, low-priced generics among them. A generic animal drug has FDA approval of its own, and the FDA describes it as acting on the animal exactly like the brand-name version.

Low-priced generic medicines exist, but the FDA gives no price comparison with custom medicines or other treatment choices. Ask the clinic which approved options fit your dog and what each would cost.

Price is not a medical reason to compound

Under FDA guidance, a lower price does not count as a medical reason to compound a copy of an approved medicine. Convenience and preference do not count either.

A worksheet for the visit

Ask the clinic for an estimate that includes each part of care:

• The exam itself.
• Any tests before starting, such as blood or urine work.
• Rechecks during treatment, and how often they come.
• The medicine, and whether a generic version exists.
• Follow-up calls or messages after the visit.

In California, the vet has to offer the owner a written prescription, to be filled either at the vet's own pharmacy or at any pharmacy the owner chooses.

Emergency calls can carry a fee

Pet Poison Helpline lists $89 per incident as its charge, and follow-up calls cost nothing extra. The ASPCA line mentions that a consultation fee may be charged but names no figure on its page.
